Reflections on the result of the EU Referendum

Eddie,

Brothers and Sisters!

We are all aware that the result of yesterday’s referendum on our EU Membership will have major implications. It has been quite a divisive campaign, and the aftermath threatens to be even more divisive. May I offer a few pastoral thoughts?

First, let us always remember that Jesus Christ is Lord, and that whatever the nations of this world do, or don’t do, our God reigns (Php 2:9-11; Isa 40:15).

Second, let us remember that God works in all circumstances to glorify His Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, by building His Church (Eph 1:11-12). It is a great encouragement to know that this is the purpose behind all that God does in this world.

Third, let those who voted to leave not rejoice too much in the result – that would be idolatry (Ps 146:3). And let those who voted to remain not despair because of the result – that would be practical atheism (Hab 3:17-18; Mt 6:31-33). But let us remember the wise words of the hymn-writer:

My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness … On Christ, the solid rock, I stand; all other ground is sinking sand.

Fourth, though we may have different opinions about Britain’s membership of the EU, we remain a forever family in Christ. What unites us is infinitely greater than anything that divides us. In troubled times we have a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate the difference Christ makes, and to showcase the gospel by which one day this broken world will be remade (Jn 13:34-35; Php 2:14-16; Rev 21:1-5).

Finally, since by God’s grace we are members of His kingdom that cannot be shaken (He 12:28), let us live out the gospel of God’s grace in the ways indicated in 1Thess 5:16-18: “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

Mission trip to Oasis by Neal and Lesley Grindrod

Tim Stephenson,
Neal and Lesley Grindrod

Romans 10:14-15 “How then can they call on One they have not believed in, and how can they believe in One of whom they have not heard? How can they hear without someone preaching to them, and how can they preach unless they are sent?”

We are thrilled that Corsham Baptist Church has given us the amazing opportunity to join the ministry team at Oasis, in Traiskirchen, Austria for 3 months later this year. We leave the UK on 5th August 2016 and expect to return towards the end of October.
As part of the team we will be reaching out to refugees who are seeking asylum in the West, our desire being to reflect the heart of God by offering them the hope, life and refuge that can only be found in Jesus.

The Oasis team’s focus is to equip those who come to faith to be able to share Jesus with others, including their own people, both in Austria and in their countries of origin. Its aim is to walk alongside refugees, offering them the Living Water of Jesus Christ whilst supporting them both practically and emotionally.

During our time at Oasis we will be involved in various areas of service including men’s, women’s, children’s and teens’ ministries; personal and group Bible studies; discipleship classes; visiting refugees; relief ministry and practical assistance. We will also take part in evenings where the gospel is explained, help run a coffee bar where the Jesus film is shown and assist in the distribution of clothing and Bibles & Christian literature in the mother tongues of the refugees.

It is also our desire to be a source of blessing and encouragement to the long-term staff at Oasis.

Prayer Requests: That the Lord will direct our steps according to His Word, and bring us into contact with the ones He wants us to reach.

Neal and Lesley Grindrod.

EU Referendum Public Debate in Rudloe

Adrian,

Cancelled out of respect for Jo Cox

We are very sorry to announce that this event has been cancelled out of respect for MP Jo Cox. Our heartfelt condolences go out to everyone affected by this tragedy.

The coming referendum to decide whether we remain part of, or leave the European Union has the potential to have long lasting effects over the coming years. We feel that it is important that we give some consideration to how we vote, and as such we have decided to provide an opportunity for our community to come and hear from both sides of the debate and ask questions.

We are not pushing an agenda for either side of the vote, but have asked both campaign teams to provide a speaker and we hope to provide a fair and balanced debate with time for questions; allowing the various issues to be discussed and help you in your decision making.

We hope that this is one small way that we can serve our community in Rudloe & Corsham and the surrounding area.

When & Where?

Saturday 18th June – 7:30pm – 9pm
Rudloe Community Centre
Leylands Road
Rudloe
SN13 0NE

Speakers

The speakers have been confirmed (selected by the respective campaigns) as:

  • Remain: Dr Razvan Constantinescu chair of the “Bristol stronger IN Alliance” and Honorary Consul of Romania in Bristol.
  • Leave: William Dartmouth, UKIP MEP representing the South West & Gibraltar.
