Please join us on a prayer walk for Neston tomorrow morning. We’ll set off from the Memorial Hall, SN13 9SN, at 8.30am.

Focus on Mission – Sunday evening

Please join us on Sunday evening at 6pm. We’re looking forward to hearing from our guest speaker, Hannah J, a missionary who has spent the last couple of years serving with AIM in a rural village in Tanzania. Nancy will lead us in a short time of worship first, and then Hannah will share about the blessings and challenges of life on the mission field, how God led her into mission and maybe a few ‘wow!’ stories too.

Midweek service – Weds 11th Sept

We would love to see you at the midweek service next Wednesday at 2pm. David M will bring a message from Luke 12: 13-21 and we’ll enjoy homemade cakes, tea, coffee and a great time of fellowship after the service.

FLAGS returns!

Rhiannon is back to work so FLAGS (Fun Learning About God and Scripture) will resume on Wednesday 11th September at 4.30-5.30pm at Priory Street. FLAGS is for children of primary school age and our time together will include crafts, a Bible story, snacks and social time. From the Elders

The Elders, on behalf of all at CBC, would like to thank Ruth for her fantastic work in helping CBC to run so smoothly over the last few years. Today (Friday) is her last day in the church office, sad for CBC but exciting for Dreamland Mission as Ruth moves to helping this amazing organisation support a rural community in Kenya. Ruth, we are so grateful for all that you have done and pray for every blessing in your new venture.

Open Doors petition

Christian leaders across sub-Saharan Africa are calling on the global Church to stand with them against violent persecution. Violence has escalated to alarming levels yet, as Nigerian pastor Barnabas says, ‘No-one is talking about.’ Please watch this video on the Open Doors website about the reality and scale of the issue. The African church is urgently calling for our support, our prayers and our voices – to make sure people are talking about it. There is a petition that you can sign at Priory Street, or sign online on the Open Doors website. Thank you.

Souper Friday events: 13th Sept

Our very own Debbie Riall will be hosting a Q&A during Souper Friday for parents or guardians of children with autism/ADHD. Come along at 10.30am for an informal time together in the creche room.

On the same Friday morning we’ll be welcoming Patrick Kaberia Muthaura, a Kenyan Fairtrade tea farmer, who is visiting Wiltshire. He’ll be popping in for a coffee and chat with whoever will be there between 11am-12pm. He’ll also be giving an illustrated talk at St Barts on Thursday 12th at 10.30am. Answers in Genesis day conference

The organisation Answers in Genesis is holding a day conference at Ladyfield Evangelical Church, Chippenham, on Saturday 28 September, 10.30am-4.00pm. The subject is ‘Understanding creation & more’ and will include presentations on creation, the flood, Adam and dinosaurs – connecting Genesis to the gospel. All are welcome (bring your own lunch).

Sheila Nowell

We send our love and condolences to the family of our dear sister and church member Sheila, who went to be with the Lord on Wednesday 19th August. The funeral service will be held at Priory Street on Thursday 29th August at 1pm and all who knew Sheila are invited to attend. You’re asked to dress smartly but not necessarily in black. Refreshments will be held in the hall after the service and if you’re able to help set up, serve drinks or clear away afterwards, please contact Ruth in the church office (01249 701078 or email office@corshambaptists.org).

An Invitation to Wonderful Wednesdays

Sue Morrell writes, Midweek Service meets every two weeks. We have worship and teaching between 2pm-3pm and then we go through to the hall and enjoy homemade cakes, tea, coffee and a great time of fellowship. Because our service is during the afternoon our demographic tends to attract people who are retired! But we’re not all old!!! Sadly though, those of us who are on the rota to serve teas and coffees and make cakes are all in our seventies or eighties! Which makes loading and unloading the dishwasher and standing for an hour tiring, and for some, impossible. Added to that, two of our regular team are about to have quite awkward operations which will put us out of action for at least two months!

So, this is both an invitation and a cry for help! The invitation is that we would love for some younger folks (even young mums! because you could slip out at 2.55pm to collect your children from school) to come and join us and bring our average age down!!! And a cry for help because we really do need some younger, fitter and more mobile help to set up and serve our refreshments. The worship and teaching is always gospel-centred and a real encouragement and challenge halfway through your week! The cakes are delicious (and if you enjoy baking we’d love to sample your cakes), we are a really friendly group and would love to get to know you better. Please think and pray about it and come along and give us a try. If you would like to know more about us have a chat to David or Sue Morrell, Julia Benham or Dave Matthews who would love to tell you more!

Our next Midweek Service is on Weds 26th at 2pm when David M will be bringing a message from Luke 10:25-37. We look forward to seeing you there!

As we aren’t meeting in person this month to pray for mission, please add these prayer points to your personal prayers:

• Africa Inland Mission: Chad: praise the Lord that longtime disciple H has told his family that he is a believer! Pray that God would calm the anger of his family, help them to listen and open their hearts to the Gospel.
• Ben Francis, BMS: pray for Ben in his disciple-making ministry in India. Praise God for the many new groups of disciples, and pray that they will grow in faith and have courage when they face persecution and discrimination.

Africa Inland Mission has been one of CBC’s mission partners for many years. We’re delighted that Hannah Jackson, a missionary serving with AIM, is coming to speak at our mission-focussed evening service on 8th September. She’ll tell us all about serving in a majority-Muslim rural village in Tanzania, the highs and lows and no doubt the creepy-crawlies! Please make a note in your diary!

Church Administrator

Rob Perks writes: Some of you may have heard that our Church Administrator, Ruth Lancaster, is moving on to a new role with IcFEM Dreamland Mission, a Christian charity set up to help fund and support the work of IcFEM in Kenya (www.dreamlandmission.org). If you’re interested to know more, I’m sure Ruth will be very happy to chat about the work they do. Ruth is amazingly well suited and gifted for the role and we wish her God’s blessing as she embarks on this new chapter. The role is based predominantly from home and so Ruth will continue to worship with us and be an active member of CBC.

It goes without saying that we will miss her hugely from the administrator role and the Trustees would all like to express their heartfelt thanks for the contribution Ruth has made to the smooth running of church life at CBC over the last 3 years – thank you Ruth!

This means that we will be looking to recruit a new Church Administrator and full details including a job description will be issued shortly but if, in the meantime, you think this opening may be one the Lord is leading you to, please talk to Rob P or any of the Trustees and we will be pleased to give you more information.

Praying for Missions

As we aren’t meeting in person to pray for missions this month, please add the following prayer needs to your personal prayers:

• Open Doors: please watch this moving video (4 mins) about Christians in Afghanistan and then pray for protection for Christians in that country as they meet together, and for wisdom as they try to share the love of God with those around them – a dangerous thing to do. Please pray too that God would dispel the spiritual darkness in their land.
• Prison Ministry: please pray for the protection of believers inside UK prisons; pray for unity and brotherly love between believers in prison, that they might shine like the stars in the sky as they hold firmly to the word of life. Pray too for believers who are about to be released, that they might be welcomed into churches and supported with love and fellowship.

Africa Inland Mission has been one of CBC’s mission partners for many years. We’re delighted that Hannah Jackson, a missionary serving with AIM, is coming to speak at our mission-focussed evening service on 8th September. She’ll tell us all about serving in a majority-Muslim rural village in Tanzania, the highs and lows and no doubt the creepy-crawlies! Please make a note in your diary!

Praying for Missions

It may be quiet this month in terms of in-person prayer meetings, but I’m sure we won’t stop praying for our mission partners. Here are some prayer needs to incorporate into your personal prayers:

• Oasis (refugee centre, Austria): there is still a need for long- and short-term workers, and for volunteers to help in the outreach programmes.
• Stuart & Lynne Little (Mercy Ships): please pray for resilience for ships’ staff as they experience unplanned changes in existing circumstances, and for continuity of staff across all departments.
• Steve Lancaster (The Word for the World): please pray that a translation team would be accepted by Chief Ndondo and the Xhosa people in Zimbabwe for a new Bible translation in their community. Pray too for the successful launch of projects in Papua New Guinea – for the formation of translation communities and the selection of translators.

Howzat!

Tim Hogg has been asked by Charlie Thompson (vicar at Melksham Church) to put together a cricket team to play them in a friendly(ish) match on the afternoon of Sunday 8th September. We just need 11 willing men/women/young adults who know roughly how to wield a cricket bat or bowl that little red thing. We also need someone who could captain the team and know where to place all the fielders – Tim says he’s a hopeless cricketer but willing to give it a go! Following the church meeting on 1st July and an update provided on the current level of increased giving pledged to the Rudloe Community Centre project, we’re asking people to continue in their prayerful consideration of any possible increase in their giving or contributing time. The additional funds required equate to every member increasing their giving by £15-£20 per month. However, we recognise that for some this is not feasible, whilst others may be able to give more.

Youth summer camps

Dan says, “Thank you so much for your prayers for the young people as they went on their summer camp. God was powerfully at work in the young people, drawing them closer to Himself. We were hugely blessed! No rain, deeper friendships were formed within the group and with West Wilts Vineyard who we teamed up with, and we had some great teaching and time before the Lord in prayer and praise.”

Please continue to pray for Dan, his family and a couple of the youth as they head to Satellites youth camp from 2nd-6th August.

South West Men’s Convention 2024 – Sat 5th October: Men of Resurrection Courage

Living courageously is the great challenge we face as Christians in this age. Too often we crumble and shrink back rather than stand tall. Brothers in Christ, you’re invited to come along to South West Gospel Partnership’s Men’s Convention at St Michael’s Centre, Stoke Gifford, to look closely at the lives of three Old Testament men who showed great courage because they believed in a great event: the resurrection.

The main talks will be by Jonty Allcock and there will be afternoon seminars on a range of applied topics, with music led by Music Ministry, and lots of opportunities for precious fellowship with other Christian men. Storage for Rudloe Community Centre

We have three items which have been donated to us for use if/when the Community Centre opens – a chest freezer, warming trolley and a range cooker. These have been stored at the Centre for the last few weeks but the Council is now requiring us to remove them until the lease is completed. So, if you have any garage or other storage space which you could offer for the next few weeks, it will be hugely appreciated. Did you write to a Christian prisoner?

More than 30 years ago Tearfund asked its supporters to act in support of a Christian falsely arrested in Peru. In July 1993 Juan Mallea was arrested as a suspected terrorist. Juan’s church alerted the Evangelical Church Council of Peru (CONEP) and they in turn asked Tearfund for help.

Tearfund supporters were encouraged to write to the Peruvian Embassy in London, and send letters to Cristina, Juan’s wife. Hundreds did. Cristina deeply valued the letters and cards she received. Thirty years later they are still kept, and remembered.

Throughout his ordeal Juan’s faith remained strong. Now Juan and Cristina are planning a visit to the UK in September in order to ‘know the country and people that gave us the support in the difficult times in our lives’. Did you write to Cristina? CBC Youth – DTI summer camp

Please pray for the young people (25 of them) as they participate in their annual camp at Stafford showground. They arrive tomorrow, 27th July, and return Thursday 31st Aug. Please pray that they would deepen relationships with each other and with God.

Mission prayer request

Please pray for Joe Rowe as he joins an AIM team that will be helping a Midlands-based church reach out to its neighbours through a special events week. The church building is situated within a community of people from a North African background. They have been resistant to open evangelism so the team will seek to witness through action rather than words. Activities will include a children’s holiday club, a community artwork challenge, a women’s group to run alongside the children’s activities with crafts and practicing English, and there will be sports activities for teenagers in the evenings. Please pray for many opportunities to share the Gospel and for bridges to be built between the church and this community. The week runs from 3-11 August.

The Planning Center app

At the church meeting this week, Jonny S told us about a new app that we’ve recently adopted called “Planning Center” Church Management System. The app is a set of software tools designed to help us organise information, coordinate events, and communicate/connect with the congregation. Its primary use within CBC initially is to help with service preparation, in particular the planning, preparation and arrangement of music. In the future, we’ll seek to trial further modules that support event coordination and registrations. Ignited Summer Lunch party

If you are a parent or carer for a child in the Ignited Junior Church group (the group that meets in the coffee hall) and have not received an invitation for your child and their family to a summer lunch party after church on 28 July or 18 August please do let Katharine Mortimer know. Junior Church memory verse

Memorizing scripture is so helpful for everyone, young or old. Our Junior Church will be memorizing a different verse each month and all the adults are encouraged to learn them too! This month’s memory verse is:

Men’s Weekend Away – 20th-22nd September

There’s still space for you on the Weekend Away if you haven’t yet booked. We’ll be staying at the YHA Llangattock Mountain Bunkhouse, Crickhowell, in the Brecon Beacons National Park. The dates are Friday 20th-Sunday 22nd September with an option to stay until Monday morning at no extra cost. The cost is £85 per person (concessions available as required) – the priority is to have you there so please talk to Ian Holmes or Dave Eckley if funding is an issue.

Teaching will be by Mark Fossey, Senior Pastor at Redeemer Church in Croydon. Mark has been involved in church ministry for over 20 years in central and suburban London. There will be plenty of food (chef duties ably supplied by our brother Tim Hogg), walks out, coffee in the local village, worship, and nightly fellowship around the firepit.

Regular Activities

• Junior Church: volunteers are needed to enable this ministry to continue at our Sunday services. You don’t necessarily have to teach and it won’t be every Sunday. Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated. If you feel you can serve in this way, please complete the form here so that the necessary safeguarding checks can be done.
• Our Community Money Advice service is available by appointment for anybody who is struggling with debt problems. Do get in touch if you would like help and advice in this area. Tel. 07895 716485.
• Prayer for Missions & the Persecuted Church: the first Tuesday of every month, 8pm on Zoom. Contact the office for login details.
• Women’s Bible Study: we meet on the last Monday every month from 7.30pm.
• Souper Friday Café: Friday mornings from 10am-1pm. Come and enjoy a free drink, cake and soup. Open for help with food items to take away too. Speak to Colin, Carol G, Brenda or Paul G for more information.
• Ark Children’s Service: last Saturday of the month 10:30am-12:00pm during term-time only.
• Toddlers: Thursdays 10:00am-11:30am during term-time only.
• Life groups meet in person and/or online. Contact us if you’d like to join one.
