Were the whole realm of nature mine,
That were an offering far too small;
Love so amazing, so divine,
Demands my soul, my life, my all.

Commenting on this verse in his book “By Grace Alone”, Sinclair Ferguson writes:

God can point us to the cross and say:

• “Do you see how much I love you?”
• “I was prepared to bear My own judgment against your sin in the person of My own Son.”
• “If I was prepared to do that for you, there is nothing I will withhold from you for your good.”

You will never understand the heart of God until you understand this.

Every time we look at the cross Christ seems to say to us, “I am here because of you. It is your sin I am bearing, your curse I am suffering, your debt I am paying, your death I am dying.” Nothing in history or in the universe cuts us down to size like the cross. All of us have inflated views of ourselves, especially in self-righteousness, until we have visited a place called Calvary. It is here, at the foot of the cross that we shrink to our true size.
